This two-day workshop will provide the clinical practitioner a step-by-step overview of a client-centered, multi-modal form of trauma treatment that can be used to 1) enhance client safety, stability, and resiliency, and 2) safely process acute to complex forms of trauma. This intervention draws upon the perspectives and techniques of body-based psychotherapy, sensorimotor psychotherapy, somatic experiencing therapy, EMDR, mindfulness practice, and other somatic-based and movement-centered modalities. New mental health practitioners, along with those trained in EMDR and/or other body-centered modalities are highly encouraged to attend.
Day 1 will focus mainly on preparing clients for trauma processing by 1) reviewing what to expect from trauma therapy, 2) building body awareness and tolerance through techniques that foster interoception, 3) practicing container, grounding, and breathing techniques that expand the window of tolerance through lowering subjective anxiety and heart rates, and 4) strengthening somatic resiliency using mindfulness and experiential exercises. Significant class time will be devoted to demonstration and partner practice.
Day 2 will focus on how to effectively process traumatic memory through the use of approach and withdrawal, along with titration techniques (bracketing, fragmenting, pendulation, etc.). An overview of the theoretical basis for body-based processing will be discussed, along with a demonstration of the approach. Additional content will include modifications, troubleshooting, applications with EMDR, troubleshooting, and how to use with complex and pre-verbal types of traumas.
All participants will receive a copy of the PowerPoint and manual that provides detailed instructions for all skills covered in the workshop. Limited seating is available.
